About the course
All lessons take place in a fully-equipped computer lab. The Professional Translation Course is specially designed to enable you to:
- learn the practical and theoretical principles underpinning best practices in translation into Greek and into English
- acquire a complete set of practical and professional skills for translation of general and specialised Greek and English texts
- gain an understanding of the basic principles of subtitling and the use of subtitling software
- demonstrate your ability to apply all your learning in a professional context
- prepare for the CIOL Diploma in Translation examination.
About the CIOL DipTrans
The CIOL DipTrans is the gold standard for anyone who wants to pursue a career as a freelance translator in Greece or to work as a translator for international corporations worldwide and meets the need for a high-level professional translating qualification.
The Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation (Ofqual), which regulates qualifications, examinations and assessments in the UK, rates the CIOL DipTrans as Level 7: postgraduate level qualification.
How is the course delivered?
The Professional Translation Course is made up of 292 contact hours over 36 weeks (two four-hour lessons per week).
The course offers you:
- translation theory, text analysis and main linguistic principles
- research and documentation methodology in paper and electronic resources
- techniques and strategies to deal with translation problems
- hands-on practice in the use of computers and word processing (MS Word) in fully-equipped computer labs
- practical guidance and tutorial support on how to enter the translation market
- continuous constructive feedback on your progress and translation practice.
How will I be assessed?
Your course progress is assessed based on:
- two translations and at least six exercises per week
- four official assignments per year
- two examinations per year.
What are the entry requirements?
Applicants must:
- be at least 18 years old (it is generally recommended that applicants should be aged 20 or over)
- have a good awareness of language and an advanced competence in both written and spoken English and Greek.
What is the selection process?
Selection of participants is determined through:
- an application form
- a one-to-one interview with a translation trainer (via Skype).

Once we’ve confirmed your participation on the course, you will be required to pay a non-refundable deposit of €300 within ten working days to guarantee a place. The remaining course fee (€2,400) must be paid in four instalments of €600.
