Student registering for an English language course at the British Council

We have many courses to choose from – so why not start today?

Registering for a course with us has never been easier.

Follow these simple steps:

Register for a course – Children and teenagers

To help you choose the right course for your child, you and your child will need to attend an online consultation. To check their level of English, children aged 6+ have the opportunity to speak to one of our teachers. Children aged 12+ will also have to do an online written placement test to help us choose the best class for them.

If your child is aged 4 to 6, please follow steps 1, 3 and 4 below (skip step 2).

Step 1 – Book an online consultation

  • Use our online service to book your consultation. Choose the date and time that is most convenient for you.
  • Please note that both you and your child need to attend the consultation.
  • The consultation is free of charge.

Step 2 – Your child should complete a short online level check (only for secondary students aged 12 to 17)

  • Once you have booked a consultation, you will receive an email with a link to our online level test, which should be completed by your child.
  • Your child will need a maximum of 45 minutes to complete the online written test. It must be completed in one sitting, at least 24 hours before the consultation.
  • The online level test is free of charge.

Step 3 – Attend your online consultation

  • You don’t need to provide any documentation when attending the consultation.
  • The consultation will consist of an interview with a teacher and a short conversation with one of our customer experience officers.
  • The interview with the teacher will be held online via Zoom and will take about 20 minutes.
  • On the day of your child’s interview, you will receive a meeting ID (invitation). Please log on ten minutes before your scheduled interview time.
  • Following your child’s interview, one of our customer experience officers will call you to discuss the options available for your child.

Step 4 – Register

  • After the consultation, we will email you a registration form and information about how to pay the course fee.
  • You must be 18 years old to be able to pay and register a child on a course with us.

Register for a course – Adults (18+)

The adult consultation will take about an hour and involves taking our level test, followed by a discussion about your needs with one of our teachers and with our counsellors.

Our level test for adults consists of an online written test and a speaking test:

  • The online written level test checks your general ability. In the booking confirmation email, you will find a link to the online written test, which consists of 130 questions that gradually increase in difficulty. They are meant to assess your vocabulary and grammar. You need to complete this test in one sitting, taking no longer than 45 minutes. You can stop when the questions become too difficult for you. Please make sure to complete the online written test at least 24 hours before the time scheduled for the speaking test you have booked.
  • The spoken part of the test is a conversation with one of our teachers, which takes approximately 10 to 15 minutes. This helps the teacher to check your speaking and listening skills, as well as your pronunciation.

The teacher will compare both parts of the test and then advise you on your overall level of English and the most appropriate course for your needs and level.

Our customer services staff will give you further course details and class timetables, and answer any questions you may have. If there are spaces, you can register and pay the reservation fee or course fee. If the course is fully booked, your name will be put on a waiting list.
