Through our partnership with ANIMASYROS, the International Animation Festival, from 22 to 28 September, we invite you to embark on a journey with us to the wonderful world of animation that springs to life every year in Syros, the capital of the Cyclades, for a rich festival programme on the theme of ‘Animated Cosmos’, dedicated to space.
In its coming-of-age year, the 18th edition of ANIMASYROS presents a multidimensional programme that includes nationwide premieres of award-winning films, seven competitive sections, special tributes, the Agora – a key reference point for the animation industry in the Eastern Mediterranean – a series of educational workshops, the VR lounge, various parallel events, international guests from around the globe and new international and domestic collaborations.
Among this year’s highlights, we are delighted to welcome Gary Thomas, co-founder and director of Animate Projects – the UK’s leading agency specialising in experimental animation – who will chair the Festival’s jury committee and also give a presentation on Animate Projects’ ‘residency-commission’ philosophy and an introduction to Planting, a project supporting early career artists in Animate’s hometown, Derby.
In parallel, two longtime friends and beloved figures of ANIMASYROS, legendary British animator Joanna Quinn – recently honoured at Annecy with an Honorary Cristal for her lifetime contribution to the art form – and animation journalist and historian Nancy Denney-Phelps, will come together to present each other’s books. Quinn, through Beryl – co-written with collaborator and screenwriter Les Mills – will reveal the behind-the-scenes process of creating the eponymous animated short, through early sketches, storyboards and final artworks. While Denney-Phelps, through her book On the Animation Trail: 20 Years of Animation Festival History – and in her personal style – will share her experiences of travelling to major animation festivals around the world, among them ANIMASYROS.
