Celebrate this year’s European Day of Languages with us at the Pedion tou Areos in Athens

For the 13th consecutive year, the educational and cultural institutions and embassies from 14 member countries of EUNIC Athens, in collaboration with the Representation of the European Commission in Athens, the State Scholarship Foundation (IKY) and the Network for the Children’s Rights, with the support of the Region of Attica, invite you to a multilingual celebration which will take you on a journey from one European country to another, exploring the fascinating world of languages and dialects with a programme of events and activities for the whole family.

This year’s celebrations will focus on the theme of ‘Democracy’, underlining the role of language and culture as a means to cultivate and promote democratic values, highlighting them as important factors for strengthening children’s skills regarding active citizenship and their participation in a prosperous society. Visitors will have the opportunity to take part in educational workshops for children, interact with the organisers and receive a range of gifts.

Programme

This year’s programme includes:

Organisers’ exhibition

  • Organisers’ booths for information, gifts and interaction with the institutions and the audience.

Narrations

  • A story-telling series that combines live spoken word and comic art, focusing on ‘Democracy’.

Creative workshops

Educational activities for children on the topic of ‘Democracy’.

  • Pin the country
An experiential activity of knowledge and exploration of Europe. At the centre of the activity is a large map of Europe, on which the countries represented at the event’s stands are marked.
  • Footprints of Democracy
Children will learn about the basic principles of democracy through art. Using paints and stamps with symbols of democracy, they will create their own unique ‘Democracy Poster’, enhancing both their creative expression and their democratic thinking.
  • Messages of Democracy
A collective installation that will be formed around a tree, which will be ‘dressed’ in colourful ribbons. Children paint and decorate their own paper doves –symbols of peace and write on them words or small messages related to democracy.
